Dam Demolition Slated to Begin Monday

The Sheraton Mill Dam will be demolished first.

Updated: June 16, 2013 at 9:22 p.m.

High water levels and river conditions that could cause safety problems are the reasons why the demolition of the two low-head dams was pushed back last week to Monday.

According to a press release issued by the city last week, removing the dams known as the Sheraton Mill Dam and the LeFever Powerhouse Dam will begin June 17. The Sheraton Mill Dam will be demolished first and the LeFever Powerhouse Dam is scheduled to come down in July.

"Cuyahoga Falls and its project team, RiverWorks and the Ohio EPA are excited to have this long awaited project begin to move forward," a statement issued by the city said. The city received a $1 million grant from the Environmental Protection Agency for the project.

The RiverWorks team includes Enviroscience of Stow, GPD Engineering, RiverReach Construction and local Sheraton Hotel owner Tom Dillon, as a senior advisor on the project.
