Walsh Jesuit Baseball Player Named Best in Ohio

MaxPreps handpicked one high school boys baseball player from each state.

Cassidy Brown, a Walsh Jesuit senior who can catch, pitch and swing the timber, was named the best high school baseball player in Ohio on Monday.  MaxPreps -- a go-to source on high school sports -- crowned Brown and 49 other players from each of the 50 states with the coveted distinction.  Brown was an All-State selection in 2012 after batting .432 with 5 homeruns, 25 RBIs and 25 runs, according to MaxPreps. The young prospect can also close on the mound; he had 5 saves last year.   Brown plans to continue his academic and athletic pursuits at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Ca. after the 2013 season.  The sports site stipulated the top player chosen is not necessarily the top prospect. Some players are chosen based on their …

Hometown Boys Reflect on the College World Series

Summit County natives answer some questions about baseball, their season at Kent State University and what's next.

The Kent State University baseball team made it to Omaha, Neb., home of College World Series. It was the first appearance in the history of the program. In fact, it’s the first time the team has made it past the regional level. After a slow start to the season, the Golden Flashes got hot and won 21 games in a row, the longest winning streak in college baseball. That ended in their second game of the super regionals when the University of Oregon won, but it made for an even more exciting walk-off single in the ninth inning to win the series and head to the world series, where they would beat Florida State University, the No. 1 team in the nation. Perhaps the best part of this Cinderella story is that the 34-player roster is that 27 of them …

Realities of Dealing with School Safety

Parents and faculty work together to keep line of communication open.

Fear for our children’s safety is a universal feeling for parents. We do everything possible to keep our children safe. We can’t hold their hands forever. We must release our grasp and let them venture out on their own. Cuyahoga Falls parents place their trust in faculty and staff as they send their children back to the classroom, away from their vigilant protection. We all know the grave realities of school violence. Memories of the Columbine shootings remain vivid in my mind. My three-year-old son napped in his room as the story broke. I watched in disbelief with my father, a retired high school vice principal, shocked by the unspeakable violence perpetrated by the Colorado teenagers. The recent news of a thwarted alleged bomb attack by …

Name: Jarrod Kilway School: Walsh Jesuit High School Class: 2003 Occupation: Manager at Volvo of Fort Myers     What was your career path leading up to your current job? After college at The University of Akron, I started with the Spitzer Organization as I have always had a love of cars. After spending a year learning the business, I made the decision to leave Ohio and head to Fort Myers. In 2006, Fort Myers was one of the largest growing areas in the U.S. Since I have been here in Fort Myers I have put in long hours and countless sleepless nights working in sales. In 2008 I took a position with Fort Myers Toyota, who at the time was the largest Toyota dealership and was selling over 1,300 cars a month. I managed their Internet Department …
