The Summit Metro Crash Response Team is rewriting the book on region-wide police investigations and how they can be undertaken with a virtually nonexistent budget.
The Summit Metro Crash Response Team isn’t your ordinary police unit. The team, comprised of 30 trained investigators from 15 local police departments, reconstructs complex crashes to determine — with a high degree of accuracy — the cause of major accidents, according to SMcRT Operations Commander Brian Battaglia. They’ve made recent headlines with reconstructions of high profile accidents and have gotten calls from cops across the state and country wanting to know just how they do it. “We’re one of if not the first multi-jurisdictional unit in the country that conducts these types of special crash investigations,” he said. It starts, says Battaglia, with a nonexistent budget. The team relies on grants, donations and a fleet of volunteer…

Information provided by the Fairlawn Police Department.
Dillard's security saw two men walk into the store, grab three polo shirts from a rack and leave the store without paying, according to a Fairlawn Police report. The shirts were valued at $83.99 total. When police arrived, the men had already left, but were soon found camping out in the Macy's parking lot, the report said. The men, 24 and 28, both admitted to being in Dillard's and admitted stealing the shirts. When police searched the car, they found the shirts, but they also found four syringes, two cotton swabs and a metal spoon — all instruments used to inject heroin, the report said. Police cited one man for possession of drug tools and drug paraphernalia, and a traffic citation for expired plates. The other man was cited with theft, …

Stephens, who was tried and convicted for his involvement in the shooting death of Cuyahoga Falls resident Kim Slayko, will be up for parole in 23 years.
Chad Allen Stephens, 22, of Akron, was sentenced to life in prison with a chance of parole in 23 years for his involvement in the aggravated robbery and murder of Falls resident Kim Slayko II. The judgment came as Stephens stood before Summit County Common Pleas Court Mary Margaret Rowlands on Wednesday morning. Stephens received 15 years to life for complicity to commit murder and eight years to life for complicity to commit aggravated robbery. The charges stem from two different incidents, reports the Akron Beacon Journal. The first occurred on Aug. 23, 2011 when Stephens set up a meeting to sell painkillers to a man at an Akron gas station. The drug deal went bad when Stephens sent an accomplice who robbed the man of several hundred …
