Dam Removal Update: City Restarts Bidding Process Following Lawsuit Settlement, Project Delays Expected

Following last Friday's lawsuit settlement with the Beaver Excavating Company, city engineer Tony Demasi discusses the next steps to get the project back on track.

In light of the recent settlement between Cuyahoga Falls and the Beaver Excavating Company, the completion of the dam removal project has been pushed back past the proposed late-July deadline. Right now, the city is preparing the proper documents for the rebid of the dam removal, said city engineer Tony Demasi. The initial paperwork should be sent out to potential bidders by late April. By mid-May, the city will receive statements of qualifications from the various contractors that will be vying for the lucrative six-figure contract. From there, the city will choose the top three candidate teams which will pitch the city on why they should be selected for the job. Teams will most likely consist of architects, engineers, contractors and …

If "beavers" know so much about dams, why didn't they participate in the rebidding process? I think a "thumbs down" on this contractors lawsuit is more appropriate! Considering that the current drought conditions to date have resulted in the lowest consistent river flow many of us have seen (or may ever see), it would have assisted in an expedited deconstruction project. Maybe these drought …   more ›

Slowly but Surely, State Road Project Moves Forward

On Monday night at its regular meeting, City Council members approved three ordinances to secure property that's needed to widen parts of the State Road corridor.

Piece by piece, the State Road widening project is coming together. On Monday night during its regular meeting at the Natatorium, the Cuyahoga Falls City Council unanimously approved three ordinances to acquire property along the State Road corridor for the project. Since last summer, the city has been in negotiations with 81 property owners who control 97 parcels of land in the prospective construction zone, said city engineer Tony Demasi. Demasi said settlements have been reached with about 90 percent of the landowners whose property will be affected by the widening. However, negotiations with the Mandarin House, located on the corner of Bath and State Road, hit a rough patch last Monday at a city council committee meeting when Falls …

State Road Widening Project One Step Closer to Breaking Ground

90 percent of the negotiations have been completed with property owners whose land will be affected. However, some have contested certain aspects of the project.

After five years of planning, the State Road widening project is just months away from getting the green light. The $9 million project, funded, in part, by the Ohio Department of Transportation, is aimed at widening a two-mile stretch of State Road from Graham to Quick Road, relieving traffic congestion, reducing car accidents and spurring new retail development, said Cuyahoga Falls City Engineer, Tony Demasi. Pedestrian traffic would also be increased with the addition of sidewalks and bike trails to each side of State, and two intersections at Bath and Steels Corners Roads would be modified to better circulate the flow of traffic, he said. Since last summer, the city has been in negotiations with 81 property owners who control 97 parcels…

Mandarin House Owner Stands His Ground on State Road Widening Project

Ed Hwee, owner of the Mandarin House, says the planned widening of Bath Road would cut out nearly 30 percent of his parking lot. City officials see it differently.

The Cuyahoga Falls Public and industrial Improvements Committee, chaired by City Councilman Jerry James, unanimously approved a motion to finalize negotiations between city officals and property owners along State Road to keep the widening project on schedule.  However, one parcel was pulled by the committee on Monday night from the ordinance to undergo further consideration. The City Council will review whether or not it’s necessary to install a right-turn lane on Bath Road to accommodate motorists who want to head north on State Road. Ciry engineer, Tony Demasi,  said it’s necessary, yet committee members James, Terry Mader and Diana Colavecchio, and Ed Hwee -- the owner of the Mandarin House restaurant which sits on the parcel in …

Any reason they couldn't built a needed lane on the OTHER side of the street, then the road can be re-lined accordingly? Yeah, I realize it might cost a little more because the lane might have to built, but the party center (former Fazio's) losing a handful of spots is nowhere as detrimental compared to half the spaces that would be taken at Mandarin House.   more ›

Residents Raise Concerns Over Removal of LeFever Dam

River Estates residents spoke up at Monday night's Cuyahoga Falls City Council Committee meeting to find out how their properties could be affected by the dam removal.

Some folks around town aren’t so enthusiastic about the proposed Cuyahoga River dam deconstruction project that could get the green light by as early as next week. City Council Ready for White Water With Dam Deconstruction During the Cuyahoga Falls City Council committee meeting on Monday night, a handful of residents from the River Estates development voiced their concerns over how their surrounding neighborhood and its recreation opportunities could be affected, particularly with the removal of the LeFever Dam near Samira’s Restaurant. Shannon Carneal, the project manager of RiverReach Construction, said the removal of the dam would drain the man made pool that stretches to Water Works Park. Pontoon boats would most likely be a thing of …
