Mayor Calls Executive's Portage Crossing Complaints 'Unconscionable'

Since January, Acme Fresh Market President Steve Albrecht has criticized the city's Portage Crossing financing plan when paired against the State Road Acme expansion deal.

The State Road Acme project Acme Fresh #10, a 60-year-old supermarket located at 2226 State Rd., is expanding from 30,000 to 52,000 square feet to accommodate a new bakery, floral and prepared food departments, a pharmacy and specialty meat case. The $8.5 million project, subsidized in part by the city, broke ground last May and will likely be complete this year, said Acme President Steve Albrecht The proposed Portage Crossing project Portage Crossing, a proposed 256,000-square-foot retail center, would be constructed on about 25 acres at Portage Trail where the former State Road Shopping Center once stood, according to Cuyahoga Falls Planning and Zoning Director Fred Guerra.  The city purchased the defunct center in 2008 and demolished it…

@Lou, I think we would probably agree on a lot of things. The point I am trying to make is that, of all the levels of government, local government is the most accessible. I can personally make an appointment with Don Robart if I so choose. I can figure out where my city councilman lives and knock on his/her door and pay a visit. As much as I'd like to think that people in our local government …   more ›

Planning Commission OKs Acme Glass Block Windows

The Cuyahoga Falls Planning Commission voted unanimously to keep the new windows that had been installed by Acme developers without the city's knowledge.

The Cuyahoga Falls Planning Commission came away pleased following Tuesday's walkthrough of the Acme Fresh Market #10 construction site.  The tour, and subsequent meeting that proceeded it, were held, in part, to get a look at and determine the fate of glass block windows that had been installed across the east side of the new building.  Plans submitted by Acme had called for plate-glass windows and awnings versus glass blocks, and the city wasn't notified of the design change, which drew the ire of several commission members.  However, after seeing the changes, the commission voted 6-0 to keep the newly installed windows, which will become an integral part of an artistic concept approved by Steve Albrecht, owner of Acme's parent company …

The planning commission has no plan or authority for the State Rd. fiasco and if they did they would be picky, picky with them. They would rather pick on local business people rather than the big boys from up North.   more ›

Another U.S. Bank Robbed in Cuyahoga Falls

Cuyahoga Falls Police and the FBI are investigating.

Another U.S. Bank in Cuyahoga Falls has been robbed. This time, it was the one located within the Acme Fresh Market at 2630 Bailey Road. Witnesses described the robber as a thin, dark-skinned man wearing a baseball cap. According to the Falls Police Facebook page, the man handed a note to a bank teller, which bluntly stated, “This is a robbery.” He then indicated he had a gun and fled the store with an undetermined amount of money. No injuries were reported. A similar robbery occurred July 20 at the U.S. Bank located inside the Graham Road Giant Eagle. During that incident, the robber walked into the supermarket, approached the only bank teller on duty, demanded all the cash from her drawer and fled.  That robber was also a thin, dark-…

Long Awaited Rebuild Underway for Acme Fresh Market

After 10 years of planning, acquiring land parcels and gathering capital, the State Road Acme Fresh Market renovation has begun and should be just about done by Thanksgiving.

To the delight of many Falls residents, the overdue renovation of the Acme Fresh Market is now underway, reports the Akron Beacon Journal.  The 60-year-old supermarket, located at 2226 State Road, will expand from 30,000 square feet to 52,000 to accommodate a new bakery, floral and prepared food departments, a pharmacy and specialty meat case, said Acme President Steve Albrecht. Acme officials wasted no time with the construction work, which immediately followed Friday morning’s groundbreaking ceremony. “It’s a big project for us,” said Albrecht. “Any store is a big project, but this one is particularly difficult. We’ll be keeping the existing store in operation while we build a new store around it. We’re going to set up a webcam so …

Coupon Craze

Ideas to save money on everyday grocery store purchases.

I’m a sucker for shows on The Learning Channel (TLC), so it’s no surprise I watched the first episodes of their new series, Extreme Couponing. The program documents the shopping strategies of bargain-savvy families. Their money-saving techniques involve a major investment of time and energy. Cameras followed J’amie, a hard-core couponer who took six hours to prepare for one trip to the grocery store. She used a methodical system to organize her list and 2,500 coupons. After the meticulous selection of each item in her haul, J’amie steered four carts through the checkout. Her pre-coupon total was a whopping $1,902.63. I watched the register tally plummet in disbelief as the clerk scanned her box of coupons. The final total was $103.72, a …
