Black Tigers finish third overall in Medina Sectional.
Colin Taylor just missed winning a Sectional title, but is among six wrestlers from Cuyahoga Falls High School headed to the District Tournament next weekend at Lorain High School. Taylor qualified by placing second at 135 pounds. He lost a tough 5-4 decision to Mike Griffith of host Medina. The Black Tigers had an excellent tournament, placing third with 161 points behind defending state champion Wadsworth (281) and traditional power Brecksville-Broadview Heights (222). Medina was fourth with 154.5 points, followed by Copley (150.5) in the 12-team field. "We think we’ve got some good wrestlers," coach Craig Wilson said. Black Tigers have two wrestlers reach consolation finals; Woodridge tied for 26th.
In a field of 44 schools, Cuyahoga Falls finished ninth and Woodridge tied for 26th place at the Bill Dies Memorial Tournament held at Firestone High School this weekend. Both the Black Tigers (119 points) and Bulldogs (47) finished the tourney well behind winner Brecksville (201). Cuyahoga Falls, in eighth place after the first day, had two wrestlers reach the consolation finals – junior Collin Taylor and senior Derek Rhodes – and two fifth-place finishers. In the consolation finals, Taylor earned a 3-1 decision over Brecksville’s Dylan Good to finish in third place at 135 pounds. In a field of 44 schools, Cuyahoga Falls placed in the top 10 after Friday's first day in the Bill Dies Memorial Tournament held at Firestone High School. The Black Tigers are currently in eighth place with 67 points, trailing leader Brecksville (82). Woodridge, with 33 points, is tied for 27th place. Black Tigers win big prior to Dies Memorial Tourney.
Cuyahoga Falls grapplers registered five pins and dominated throughout the match as they won their dual meet on the road against Hudson 47-22 Thursday night. The Black Tigers started off slow and experienced back-to-back pins by the Explorers in the 103- and 112-pound weight classes. But Coach Craig Wilson’s team remained focused and intense at Ray “Buck” Hyser Gymnasium and gained momentum with each win. Falls’ first win was via a forfeit at 119 pounds by senior Devon Brandt. Junior B.J. Rhodes (125 pounds) and senior captain Tyler Kennedy (130) continued the winning ways for the Tigers and posted an eight-point shutout major decision and 5-0 decision, respectively.
