Company Ravaged by Fire Making a Comeback in Cuyahoga Falls

Cuyahoga Falls and Summit County officials were able to keep Technicote Inc. in the city, save 40 jobs and bring in $10 million worth of investment after a fire tore through the local company.

When a fire ripped through the Technicote complex in December of 2011, many felt the local company would pack up and move on. Now, a year after the blaze, Technicote’s operations are already back up and running thanks to a $10 million, 45,800-square-foot addition that was constructed to repair and expand on the damaged facility.  "After evaluating numerous options in various states and sites, we concluded rebuilding at our current location in Cuyahoga Falls was the best option,” said Technicote President Doug O’Connell in a prepared statement. “We were anxious to retain our experienced workforce, since they are one of the keys to producing the unique products we offer. The property tax savings would amount to $35,000 a year, she said. If council members pass the agreement next week, construction of the proposed 45,000 …

Cause of Technicote Fire Unknown

Workers escaped safely and fire fighters worked as group to control the blaze.

Cuyahoga Falls Fire Department got a call at 3:49 a.m. to report to the Technicote fire. The main blaze was under control within three or four hours, said Deputy Fire Marshal Tim Mier. All ten workers there at the time escaped unharmed. No firefighters were harmed. A secondary alarm was put out for mutual aid, bringing one unit each from Akron, Stow, Tallmadge and Monroe Falls. The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time, though it damaged a good portion of the building. Technicote manufactures adhesives, papers and films. Sections of the facility, including some offices, manufacturing space and maintenance area were relatively unharmed. Workers are going through Technicote now, cleaning and salvaging what they can, said Mier. Some…
