School Security Expert Offers Advice to Keep Students Safe

Ken Trump, a nationally known school security expert, is trying to add context to the nation-wide discussion of school safety.

After the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary on Dec. 14, school security has once again become a main issue in education. On Monday, school security expert Ken Trump, president and CEO of National School Safety and Security Services, gave a presentation for the Solon City School District putting the topic of school safety into context. While he is conducting an in-depth analysis of the security in Solon schools, his message to parents is applicable to everyone. Cuyahoga Falls Schools Superintendent: 'We Are Not Profiling Children'

The district is working to create a safer learning environment with new security measures, but according to Dr. Todd Nichols, that does not include profiling children or creating a "list" of students who may be prone to violence.

Cuyahoga Falls High School faculty, staff and students were relieved to learn the fire alarm was tripped on accident by a 2-year-old.

Cuyahoga Falls High School was put on "place and secure status" when a 2-year-old inadvertently pulled a fire alarm at 10:51 a.m. Friday morning. Principal Anne Alfano said surveillance video confirmed the child tripped the alarm while in the arms of a parent. "To know it wasn't one of the kids was a huge relief," said Alfano. Once the alarm sounded, faculty, staff and students evacuated the school while Cuyahoga Falls Police and Fire assessed the situation, she said. When students returned to class, place and secure was briefly activated, then lifted. Alfano explained place and secure status is implemented to closely supervise students and to restrict their hallway movement. While the status is active, teaching and learning typically isn'…
