Conned A Cuyahoga Falls resident reportedly gave someone $2,000 to secure sweepstakes winnings. By April 27, after a year of sending money, the man grew suspicious and called Falls police. Officers quickly deduced the sweepstakes was a sham, and police have no leads on the suspected con man. Thieves love unlocked doors A Cuyahoga Falls woman arrived to her unlocked 11th Street home on April 26 and realized her Apple MacBook and TVs had been swiped. Total loss: $3,500. There is a suspect, and the woman intends to prosecute. Who steals paint? An unknown number of small-time crooks reportedly broke into a house in the 2800 block of Norma Street on April 29 and stole $220 worth of paint and brushes. There are no leads or suspects. Scammed On Jan. 23, a Cuyahoga Falls woman was reportedly bilked out of $503 after an unidentified con man called her at work, and convinced her to buy and activate a prepaid network card from vanillareload.com, according to a Cuyahoga Falls police report. Police are investigating. Email death threat A Cuyahoga Falls man received an email in which his life was threatened, according to a Jan. 22 police report. The sender also claimed a contract had been put out on the man's life. The man intends to prosecute. Just plain creepy A woman living in the 2000 block of Bailey Road told police an unknown stalker sent her text messages documenting what she was doing, according to a police report. Neighbors thwart attempted burglary On Nov. 11, two Cuyahoga Falls residents spotted a suspicious character walking up to a residence in the 1600 block of 13th St. As they approached the home to investigate, they heard a loud bang and quickly confronted the young man who was trying to break through a side door. The would-be burglar immediately ran, threw his bike over the back fence of the property and rode off into the Quirk Cultural Center parking lot. There are several witnesses and Cuyahoga Falls Police are investigating. Grand theft Chrysler A purple 1998 Chrysler Concorde was stolen from RadAir, located at 1200 W. An 80-year-old woman was recently scammed out of $7,000. The suspects pretended to be Akron Police Department detectives and told her they were investigating a fraud at her bank. They instructed her to withdraw the money without explanation to the tellers, and said they would pick up the cash. The woman, a Cuyahoga Falls resident, was approached in a parking lot by a woman who claimed to be a detective but did not show any identification. The elderly woman contacted Akron Police and learned it was a scam. Police are investigating. Car theft update Nineteen additional car thefts from locked and unlocked cars were reported this week. Elderly taxpayers in Ohio have been targeted.
The Internal Revenue Service is warning Ohioans to be on the lookout for a scam in which they are persuaded to file a false income tax return with the promise of a large tax refund. The scam, which has targeted elderly residents in the Midwest, has now spread to Ohio, an IRS news release says. The victim, typically a senior citizen, is duped into paying someone to file an unneeded tax return -- not only losing that money, but opening the door for identity theft. “Scammers are posing as tax return preparers, targeting the elderly and others receiving Social Security benefits. The latest local crime update in Cuyahoga Falls.
A resident of Tallmadge Road contacted the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department on March 3 after learning that an unknown suspect had visited a number of his neighbors without his knowledge to solicit contributions to benefit his daughter, who suffers from Leukemia. Police say the suspects used the money to buy cigarettes and lottery tickets at a nearby gas station. Detectives have a lead on who the suspects might be. In other crime news, a man called 911 late March 6 to tell police that an unknown black male shattered the front window of his home and pointed a gun in his direction, demanding entry to the residence.
