Edward South of Highpoint Lane in Cuyahoga Falls will be sentenced soon for two third-degree felonies after a jury found him guilty of operating a vehicle under the influence. Specifications were added to his charge for having five prior offenses in the last 20 years. “This is Mr. South’s twelfth OVI conviction in the last 25 years,” said Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh in a prepared statement. “He clearly has not learned his lesson and remains a danger to society as long as he has access to a vehicle and our roadways.” South, 70, has a prior felony OVI conviction from Portage County as well. The Ohio State Highway Patrol sent out a press release Monday morning notifying the public that state troopers will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint sometime this week. The county where the checkpoint will be set up will be announced the day before and the exact location will be announced the morning of the checkpoint. "If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don't let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired," the patrol said in a prepared statement. It's one of the biggest drinking days of the year — but authorities are urging people to celebrate responsibly.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol, anticipating heavier than usual traffic over the Thanksgiving weekend, released a video that could dampen some enthusiasm for holiday spirits. The eight-minute video shows compelling footage from actual traffic stops. Last Thanksgiving weekend, 14 people were killed in traffic accidents. That figure has increased from 10 people who were killed on Ohio's roadways in 2011. Each year between Thanksgiving and New Year's, nearly 39 people die in crashes around the state, the Patrol says. The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced Saturday morning that it will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint in Brimfield with the help of the Brimfield Police Department. Stow Police officers said a mother of two was pulled over May 11 and subsequently charged for drunken driving and endangering children. Officers pulled over a 1996 green Chevy Lumina on State Route 8 north near the Graham Road exit May 11 around 5 p.m. According to the report, the woman was suspected of drinking alcohol. When officers pulled the 27-year-old from Cuyahoga Falls over, officers saw two young children in the car. The 4- and 5-year-old girls were the daughters of the Falls woman. She was arrested and charged with an OVI and endangering children, both first-degree misdemeanors in this situation. She was taken to Summit County Jail and released on a $500 personal recognizance bond.

Brimfield Township, OH — This morning, the Ohio State Highway Patrol announced that a checkpoint will be set up on State Route 43 near milepost 9 in Brimfield Township. The checkpoint will be conducted from 10 p.m. tonight until 3 a.m. Saturday morning. The checkpoints are federally funded and local police departments assist in the operation.
