A Bright Spot in the Tough Economy: Consignment Shops

Gently used is new again as second-hand and consignment store sales surge in the troubled economy.

As the prices for a gallon of gas and groceries have increased, second-hand and consignment shops say they've noticed sales increase since the economy started to struggle. Connie's Collections, located in the same plaza as On Tap at 3255 State Rd., is a consignment boutique offering women's clothes, shoes, purses, jewelry and accessories, along with new jewelry and accessories. For over 15 years, owner Connie Owen has bought and sold "upscale, current trends only, laundered and pressed." She said consignment shopping has increased with the slumping economy.  Plato's Closet, at 564 Howe Ave., buys and sells gently used clothing and accessories for teenagers and young adults. Owner Bob Minney said, "The economy is tough and has benefited our…

St. Patrick’s Day story hour for the kids; a lot of bread for a little dough!

In some parts of the country, St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, is revered as a national holiday. Some cities dye rivers green for the occasion. Akron will jump the gun a bit this year with a St. Patrick’s Day parade at noon on Saturday, March 12, on South Main Street. It’s free. March 17 is a little more low-key elsewhere. Of course finding good deals isn't restricted to St. Patrick's day. Here are a few bargains:  • Barnes & Noble, 4015 Medina Rd., Fairlawn, 330-665-5199. Barnes & Noble has a St. Patrick’s Day Story Hour for the younger set at 10 a.m. March 17. The event is free, although you can be sure the bookseller hopes you’ll spring for a coffee or a few books while you’re there.  • Steak ’n Shake, 4000 Medina Rd., Fairlawn, 330-670-…

We just ate at Steak n Shake two weeks ago, the one in Cuyahoga Falls. We couldn't believe how delicious it was and when my boyfriend looked at the check he said "Wow, I'm used to paying a lot more than this when we go out to eat."   more ›

Frugal Family: Local Deals to Save You Time and Cash

Help for leaky roof, affordable dining and more.

We’re in a seasonal no-man’s land: Winter is getting closer to the end, but not quite there, and it’s too soon to drag out the patio furniture. Monday’s storm reminded us of that. Merchants and service providers are in the same boat. Maybe they’re motivated to offer some extra-good deals while we wait out spring’s arrival. • Norbrook Building and Restoration, 3869 Motz Dr., Akron; 330-352-7913. The ice dams melted, then wintry weather returned. Each winter a few roofs start leaking in these freeze-thaw cycles. Sometimes the frugal thing to do is spend a few bucks now to prevent more expensive repairs later. And if the repair job is more than you can handle, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and call a pro. Norbrook specializes in …
