After realizing she spends thousands of dollars annually on her pets, your Local Leash columnist lists five ways to save money and still support a furry family.
Until now, I've resisted doing the math on how much my pets actually cost me monthly. For the sake of this column, dear readers, here it is: One dog, two cats, two seniors, two cases of arthritis, one case of feline asthma, one case of feline hyperesthesia and one case of feline herpes of the eye = $382 per month. That number is very sobering. It adds up to over $4,500 a year and it only includes food, medicine and vitamin supplements. It doesn't account for vet visits, like the $300 we spent on the dog's teeth cleaning, heartworm test and suspicious lump removals last month (they were benign, thankfully), or the $35 I just spent on the new, softer bed for the arthritic cat. It also doesn't include the very large, bulk purchase of super-…

If you have a taste for the spicy, check out Raj Mahal. A favorite is the chicken makhani, tender chicken cubes broiled in a tandoor with a blend of creamed tomato curry and exotic spices, for just $11. Dinner is served from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sorry, no alcoholic beverages. You can reserve your table, order online, or just walk in. They offer dine-in coupons as well. And for those younger …

Ideas to save money on everyday grocery store purchases.
I’m a sucker for shows on The Learning Channel (TLC), so it’s no surprise I watched the first episodes of their new series, Extreme Couponing. The program documents the shopping strategies of bargain-savvy families. Their money-saving techniques involve a major investment of time and energy. Cameras followed J’amie, a hard-core couponer who took six hours to prepare for one trip to the grocery store. She used a methodical system to organize her list and 2,500 coupons. After the meticulous selection of each item in her haul, J’amie steered four carts through the checkout. Her pre-coupon total was a whopping $1,902.63. I watched the register tally plummet in disbelief as the clerk scanned her box of coupons. The final total was $103.72, a …

St. Patrick’s Day story hour for the kids; a lot of bread for a little dough!
In some parts of the country, St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, is revered as a national holiday. Some cities dye rivers green for the occasion. Akron will jump the gun a bit this year with a St. Patrick’s Day parade at noon on Saturday, March 12, on South Main Street. It’s free. March 17 is a little more low-key elsewhere. Of course finding good deals isn't restricted to St. Patrick's day. Here are a few bargains: • Barnes & Noble, 4015 Medina Rd., Fairlawn, 330-665-5199. Barnes & Noble has a St. Patrick’s Day Story Hour for the younger set at 10 a.m. March 17. The event is free, although you can be sure the bookseller hopes you’ll spring for a coffee or a few books while you’re there. • Steak ’n Shake, 4000 Medina Rd., Fairlawn, 330-670-…
