Mayor Calls Executive's Portage Crossing Complaints 'Unconscionable'

Since January, Acme Fresh Market President Steve Albrecht has criticized the city's Portage Crossing financing plan when paired against the State Road Acme expansion deal.

The State Road Acme project Acme Fresh #10, a 60-year-old supermarket located at 2226 State Rd., is expanding from 30,000 to 52,000 square feet to accommodate a new bakery, floral and prepared food departments, a pharmacy and specialty meat case. The $8.5 million project, subsidized in part by the city, broke ground last May and will likely be complete this year, said Acme President Steve Albrecht The proposed Portage Crossing project Portage Crossing, a proposed 256,000-square-foot retail center, would be constructed on about 25 acres at Portage Trail where the former State Road Shopping Center once stood, according to Cuyahoga Falls Planning and Zoning Director Fred Guerra.  The city purchased the defunct center in 2008 and demolished it…

@Lou, I think we would probably agree on a lot of things. The point I am trying to make is that, of all the levels of government, local government is the most accessible. I can personally make an appointment with Don Robart if I so choose. I can figure out where my city councilman lives and knock on his/her door and pay a visit. As much as I'd like to think that people in our local government …   more ›

Acme Security Guard Stops Theft, Takes Punch to the Face

The following was obtained from Cuyahoga Falls police reports dated Feb. 23. It does not indicate a conviction.

Things got physical when an Acme security guard confronted an alleged thief who was trying to flee the Bailey Road grocery store on Feb. 23.  According to a Cuyahoga Falls police report, it started when a guard saw an 18-year-old Silver Lake resident stuff three bottles of alcohol into his jacket and leave the store. As the guard stopped him, the teenager reportedly closed his fist and punched him in the face. Police arrived on scene, arrested the teen and charged him with theft and underage possession of alcohol, both first-degree misdemeanors.

State Road Acme Sets New Opening Date

The grocery store was slated to open in January of this year; now city and store officials plan an opening date of mid- to late-April

Updated Feb. 13, 4:15 p.m. Those waiting for the unveiling of the State Road Acme's expansion won't have to wait much longer. City and store officials say the opening will come this spring. In addition to interior work, Cuyahoga Falls Planning and Zoning Director Fred Guerra said the store must also make some changes to comply with city codes. Those changes include the window openings on 23rd Street and finishing the employee parking lots. "What makes it difficult is because they're keeping the old store open while they're building the new store," Guerra said. "They're building the new store around the old store, basically." The store's square footage will more than double, from 25,000 square feet to 52,500 square feet. The Cuyahoga Falls …

Acme Construction Under Falls Planning Commission Microscope

The Cuyahoga Falls Planning Commission will tour the Acme construction site Tuesday after learning the grocery chain had executed major design changes without notifying the city.

The Cuyahoga Falls Planning Commission will take a look around the new Acme Fresh Market #10 to ensure the grocery chain is abiding by its construction plan that was submitted to and approved by commission members.  The tour was scheduled after Acme recently completed a major design change without notifying the city, reports the Falls News Press. The change included installing rows of glass blocks in place of plate-glass windows and awnings that were going to face State Road.  According to Cuyahoga Falls Planning and Zoning Director Fred Guerra, Acme said the glass blocks were chosen for artistic reasons and are intended to complement a sculpture that will be hung on the east side of the building.  An Acme representative will guide the …

Long Awaited Rebuild Underway for Acme Fresh Market

After 10 years of planning, acquiring land parcels and gathering capital, the State Road Acme Fresh Market renovation has begun and should be just about done by Thanksgiving.

To the delight of many Falls residents, the overdue renovation of the Acme Fresh Market is now underway, reports the Akron Beacon Journal.  The 60-year-old supermarket, located at 2226 State Road, will expand from 30,000 square feet to 52,000 to accommodate a new bakery, floral and prepared food departments, a pharmacy and specialty meat case, said Acme President Steve Albrecht. Acme officials wasted no time with the construction work, which immediately followed Friday morning’s groundbreaking ceremony. “It’s a big project for us,” said Albrecht. “Any store is a big project, but this one is particularly difficult. We’ll be keeping the existing store in operation while we build a new store around it. We’re going to set up a webcam so …

Cuyahoga Falls Stores Remove Ground Turkey From Shelves for Salmonella Risk

Products among 36 million pounds of meat made by Cargill.

Meat giant Cargill Inc. is recalling close to 36 million pounds of ground turkey -- including products sold locally at area Giant Eagle under its store brand label and Acme under the Honeysuckle Brand -- following a salmonella outbreak that has killed one and sickened more than 70 people across the country, including some in Ohio. The United States Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday that the products may be contaminated with a multi-drug resistant strain of Salmonella Heidelberg. Cargill products potentially affected were produced at the company’s Springdale, Ark. facility from Feb. 20, 2011, through Aug. 2, 2011, according to a company press release.
