Robert E. Farrell (Bob), age 86, passed away on March 1st in the San Francisco Bay area of California. He lived most of his life in Kent and Cuyahoga Falls before moving to California early in the 21st Century to be near his son. A week after turning 17, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy during wartime in February of 1944. Serving as a Torpedoman’s Mate he was awarded two Liberation of the Philippines medals, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He later served on board the USS Stack as she was readied for the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands during Operation Crossroads. Over 31 years Bob worked for B.F. Phyllis R. "Bobbie" Cottle was raped, beaten, blinded with a knife and left to die in a burning car nearly 30 years ago. That hardship turned her into an advocate for victims' rights and the rights of the blind.
Phyllis R. "Bobbie" Cottle was raped, beaten, blinded with a knife and left to die in a burning car nearly 30 years ago. That hardship had turned the Cuyahoga Falls resident into an advocate for victims' rights and the rights of the blind. Cottle spent years being a vocal advocate and died Jan. 25 of cancer at the age of 73. Cottle's daughter Dianne Cannady told the Record-Courier the family will continue a letter-writing campaign to the Ohio Parole Authority when her assailant, Samuel Herring, is eligible for parole in July 2019. Parker lived in Cuyahoga Falls for 62 years, and accomplished much in the city before her passing on Jan. 27.
Hester H. Parker, 90, passed away on Jan. 27 at Gardens of Western Reserve. Mrs. Parker was born in Mooresville, NC and had resided in Cuyahoga Falls since 1951, according to the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Cuyahoga Falls where she was a Deacon, had been a Sunday School Teacher and was active in church activities. She had volunteered at the Quirk Cultural Center and Ruth Nichols Missionary Society. She remained active, lively and sociable into her mid-eighties. Preceded in death by her husband, George and son, Gerald M Parker, she is survived by her daughter, Pamela Robin Parker, of S. Euclid, and daughter-in-law, Margo Parker, of Akron. Mary Ann Thomas, 80, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 9. Born in Tallmadge, she had lived most of her life in Cuyahoga Falls. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Eugene's Catholic Church, according to clifford-shoemaker.com. She attended George Barber Grade School and graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in January 1950. Her first place of employment was Lawson Milk Company. She worked as a secretary for Costigan Precast in the Falls, then worked 17 years at Goodyear Tire in the Billing and Credit Department before retiring in 1993. Mary Ann loved life, her family and was always strong in her faith. Sauser is survived by many loving family members and friends.
Kathleen Broughton Sauser, 60, of Peninsula, passed away on Monday, July 2. Sauser was raised in Peninsula, Ohio and Belfast, Ireland. She graduated from Woodridge High School and attended Texas Women's University. She became ill with multiple sclerosis at the age of 24 and battled the disease for 36 years, according to the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home. During periods of remission, she raised goats near Dubuque, Iowa, visited Nepal while studying Anthropology and Sociology at The University of Akron, and scuba dived in the Caribbean. She lived for three years in Barbados and 10 years on a boat in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands. After a two-year stretch in Hawaii, Kathleen returned to Ohio due to poor health. Robert (Bob) K. Pfaff, METRO RTA’s Executive Director, died Monday after a longstanding battle with cancer. He was 61. Pfaff began his career at Metro as a bus operator in 1974 and worked his way up through the ranks. He worked at the transportation authority for 38 years, serving 17 as the Executive Director, according to a Metro RTA press release. Over that time, his accomplishments included helping Metro go countywide, introducing Sunday service, kicking off service to and from Cleveland, and the 2009 opening of the Transit Center in downtown Akron. In June, Pfaff was honored with the Leonard Ronis Excellence in Transit Award through the Ohio Public Transit Association. He was the father of four daughters, grandfather to four …

When Gino Aliteri, 10, of Stow died Sunday afternoon, Fishcreek PTA President Jen Taylor decided to start a porch light vigil to mourn his passing. The news of his death moved people from Stow and around the country — in Texas, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, South Carolina and even in Stow's backyard in Cuyahoga Falls — to turn their porch lights on for Gino. Long-time radio host reportedly died of a heart attack
The "voice of common sense" as he was so often called is silent today. WNIR talk radio host Howie Chizek, of Twinsburg, died Saturday at the age of 65. Numerous media outlets report the Parmalee Drive man died of a heart attack while on a trip to Disney World with underpriveleged children. Second Lt. David Edward Rylander, 23, of Stow, was laid to rest Saturday at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
Second Lt. David E. Rylander, 23, of Stow was killed May 2, 2012 after sustaining injuries when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. Previous coverage:
