Summa Western Reserve Hospital's Dr. Ron Russ Inducted into Ohio Osteopathic Association Mentor Hall of Fame

Cuyahoga Falls, OH, August 21, 2013 —The Ohio Osteopathic Association recently inducted Summa Western Reserve Hospital’s Ron Russ, D.O., FACOFP, Vice President of Graduate Medical Education, Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine, into the OOA Mentor Hall of Fame, along with 17 other physician inductees. “I’m humbled by this recognition,” said Dr. Russ. “As medical professionals, it’s imperative that we impart our wisdom to our younger counterparts, allowing them to learn from our experience and advance the medical discipline in their own rights. That’s what the OOA mentoring awards are all about, and I’m honored to be a part of this valuable program.” The OOA established the George L. Eckert, DO Mentor of the Year Award in 2011 to recognize the namesake family physician from Columbus who counseled hundreds of medical students, residents and new doctors throughout his 57 years of practice. Each year, the award honors one physician who exemplifies a compassionate commitment to developing the next generation of physicians. The award also carries a $1,000 donation to a charitable organization of the recipient’s choice. The Mentor Hall of Fame was established in response to the high number of worthy Mentor of the Year nominations submitted by osteopathic medical students. All past nominees were inducted into the Mentor Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Ohio Osteopathic Symposium held on May 18, 2013. Hundreds of physicians and osteopathic medical students attended the event. The fourth-year medical student who nominated Dr. Russ, said, “Dr. Russ believes in a hands-on approach to learning…he would allow me to diagnose, discuss treatment plans and perform OMM (osteopathic manipulative medicine). He models a successful work/family balance and is active in the community, coaching sports and offering a free sports physical program every year.” At Summa Western Reserve Hospital, Dr. Russ’s responsibilities include overseeing seven residency programs in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic Surgery (ENT), and Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. The physician-owned and led hospital provides students with a unique training ground that is rooted in service excellence at all points of care. In addition to their technical training, students learn a concierge approach to create safer treatment environments and improved care experiences when attending to patients.
