Summa Western Reserve Hospital Offers Free Joint Surgery Information Sessions

Summa Western Reserve Hospital has expanded its patient satisfaction and education initiatives to include free pre-operative informational sessions for patients who will be having hip and knee replacement surgery at the Cuyahoga Falls location. The “Joint Academy” class sessions are also open to those who may be interested in learning more about the elective procedures. Sessions will be offered the first and third Tuesday of every month with next month’s session to be offered March 5th and 19th at 5 p.m. Sessions are held at Summa Western Reserve Hospital, 1900 23rd St. Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 44223 in Conference Room 1. Session visits generally last 60 – 90 minutes. Registration is required. Guests must RSVP with the number of attendees by Friday at 11 a.m. the week prior to each session.

“The sessions are a great opportunity for the community to, not only learn about the surgical and rehabilitation process but, address any questions or concerns they might have,” says orthopedic surgeon Dr. Douglas Chonko. “Even if someone is ‘on the fence’ about electing to have a surgery, it is a great way for them to understand the process and get to know the level of comprehensive care we offer.”

During each information session, guests will receive dinner and review what to expect before, during and after their elective hip or knee surgery to better streamline the arrival, surgical process and healing timeline. Discharge instructions as well as home-going medications and the transition process from home to rehabilitation to recovery will be reviewed. A physical therapist and occupational therapist will also discuss post-operative exercises and rehabilitation information for recovery. Care givers are encouraged to attend.

Registered guests will receive an information guide and free travel bag. Tours of the hospital are also available to interested guests who want to better understand facility surroundings, amenities and services.
