Voters to Decide on Woodridge Levy

With state funding cuts in sight, the school board places a levy on 2011 fall ballot.

The Woodridge Board of Education voted to place a levy on the fall ballot after having waiting to evaluate state funding cuts.

The Board approved the measure Tuesday night. The district will ask voters to support a 5.88-mill 10-year replacement levy, estimated to bring in $2.85 million annually.

The district had originally planned to go to the voters in May for a levy that would generate $3.25 million, but Superintendent Walter Davis recommended the district wait for concrete numbers from the state.

“It was very wise of our superintendent to recommend removing the levy from the ballot last May,” Cheryl Hoover said, school board president.

“Now that the state budget is in place, we have a more accurate picture of our financial situation.”

Hoover said the budget cuts made earlier this year were also in an effort to keep lower the costs for taxpayers.

“Trimming our budget by 1.4 million dollars has made a significant difference and will allow our taxpayers to keep more of their hard-earned money,” she said.

Hoover said the board plans to establish a levy committee for the fall election.
