Principal Schoonover to Leave DeWitt Elementary School

The Richfield native accepted a position with Cuyahoga Heights City Schools.

Students at will have a new principal when they return to school in August.

Principal Renee Schoonover will leave her position of three years with the for an elementary-school principal position with the Cuyahoga Heights School District that will begin Aug. 1. The Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education May 23, unanimously approved the resignation. Schoonover’s contract with the school district ends June 30.

“I have just been blessed to be part of the team here at DeWitt, teachers as well as parents. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to have worked in Cuyahoga Falls,” Schoonover said.

In a May 26 letter to DeWitt Elementary students’ families, Schoonover said the Cuyahoga Heights principalship will involve working closely with pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade curriculum.

A Richfield native, she taught elementary-school students for 16 years in the Parma City School District and was a principal in the Marietta City School District prior to beginning her position as DeWitt principal in August 2008.

“Renee Schoonover is an outstanding educational leader who has been a wonderful asset to our district. We wish her well in her future endeavors,” said Paula Snyder, director of human resources for Cuyahoga Falls schools.

The school district posted the open DeWitt Elementary position on its website May 26; the deadline for applications is June 9.

“We’re sorry to see that she’s leaving the Falls. She’s been a great asset to DeWitt Elementary. She’s always connected with the students and parents,” Superintendent Ed Holland said (who will take over as the this year.)

Having so far received 72 applications, the school district is in the process of screening candidates for the open position of principal at Richardson Elementary and will also consider those candidates for the DeWitt Elementary principalship, Holland said.

“We’ll take a look at our needs at each of our buildings. It is possible that an existing Cuyahoga Falls principal may be reassigned” to another school within the district in a potential administrative realignment, he said.
