Panel of Stakeholders in School District to Interview Finalists for Superintendent

Falls Board of Education considers opening part of each session to the public.

The Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education discussed Monday whether to conduct part of the final interviews this week of two candidates for superintendent during executive session or open them in part to the public.

The interviews will take place at 4 p.m. Wed. and Thurs. for finalists Domenic Paolo, superintendent of Fairport Harbor Exempted Village School District, and Todd Nicholas, superintendent of Bucyrus City School District.

During the first hour of each session, candidates will be interviewed by a panel of school-district stakeholders comprising nine teachers, six support-staff members, 18 administrators, seven community members and four to five students, said Paula Snyder, human resources director for the Cuyahoga Falls City School District.

During the second hour, the Board of Education will also question the candidates, with participation from the stakeholders.

Educational consultant Paul Pendleton, who facilitated the district’s search to replace Superintendent Ed Holland, will meet with the stakeholders at 3:30 p.m. on both days to instruct them on the interview process.

Boardmember Barbara Gunter asked Pendleton whether the school district is required to conduct candidate interviews with stakeholders during executive session or whether the first part of each interview could be open to the public.

Pendleton said an executive session is advisable for a “candid conversation,” but that it would be up to the board to decide whether to open them to the public.

“Since we hired you as our consultant, as our expert, then we should follow your lead and hold it in executive session,” said board member Curtis Grimes.

Board President Therese Dunphy was out of town and absent from the meeting.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will be June 27. Because of library renovations, the meeting will take place in the board meeting room on the second floor of Cuyahoga Falls High School.
