Our Town Didn't Win, But One School Did

California residents won Deck the House contest.

The Powell family, of Davis, California, took Patch's national Deck the House contest seriously.

And thanks to Patch, some children will have more learning tools at their school to become well-rounded, knowledgeable adults. 

Some of the Powell's children and family friends handed out flyers around the area promoting the family's decked out house.

This effort is part of what got the . The final goal was to climb to the top to win the $100,000 for local schools. 

With the help of media company , local and online support and the kids, the family reached their goal.

"We all won," Kristy Powell said, who works at .

A little girl approached Powell and asked for tether ball books following the first-place win. Which reminded her, "You want to benefit the kids directly," she said.

Winfred Roberson, superintendent and family friend spoke well of the win.

"This is symbolic of the Davis community, their commitment to education," Roberson told me. "It just symbolizes how strong this community is."

When the Roberson asked how the Powells would like the money spent, they responded, saying they would trust the decision.
