Falls Board of Education: Nine Candidates to Choose From; One Seat to Fill

Candidates will be interviewed this week for the open board of education seat. The new member will most likely be chosen by June 26.

The is on its way to deciding who should fill the open seat left after .

At its regular meeting on Monday, the board said

President Dave Rump said he and his peers will begin interviewing candidates on Wednesday and Thursday evening of this week.

“We hope to have a replacement for the board member by the June 26 meeting,” said Rump.

Ohio law dictates the seat must be filled within 30 days of Grimes’s resignation, which puts the announced appointment date four days before the June 30 deadline, he said.

If the board is unable to select a candidate before the 30-day period is up, the decision will then be made by the Summit County Probate Court, said board vice president Kellie Patterson.

The board started the discussion of whom it would like to choose during a closed-door executive session following Monday's meeting.

Whomever is appointed will sit on the board for about 18 months (the remainder of Grimes's term) and will have the option of running to retain the seat in the November 2013 election.

The nine candidates the board is considering are:

  • David Devany
  • Bruce Endlich
  • Esther Harnack
  • Dean Hull
  • Wes Johnston
  • Mark Modic
  • Mike Penta
  • Bob Pyke
  • Karen Schofield

Which of the following would you choose for the open board member seat? Tell us in the Comments.

Why not give Kellie Patterson another seat? She sure talks enough for two people.

No personal attack here (other than yours on me).

Every time the subject of education comes up I think about that video Mike Penta did on why things need to change in our schools. He understands the direction education needs to be going. It would be foolish if the school board decided not to pick him.

Observing Kellie Patterson I think she does a wonderful job as a school board member!! Our school system needed change I think that's why she was voted in. I think the question was who should fill the empty seat! Sad how people feel the need to keep bullying her as if we are all still in highschool!! We are trying to get the children to stop bullying how are we going to accomplish that when we have so many adults bullying adults? Another sad thing is Kellie is one of the nicest people I have ever met. She wouldn't hurt a soul!! How sad for the people who haven't taken the time to see that!! I think it must be jealousy!!

It is my hope that the person who is appointed understands the workings of a large business and a classroom. It is said that changes need to be made, but can a person judge what changes should be made without consulting with those who are a part of the day to day operations of this business? Just as I would not judge what happens in a workplace without experiencing it for myself or talking with the employees within, I would hope that our new board member would come to the table with an open mind and listen to the wonderful people who do their best to educate the students in our community.

You're right, two Kellie's would be great. So sad we only have one of her...

What is wrong with you people? Are you ever able to behave like civilized adults? The problem with the majority of you is that you have lost site of what is truly important, the kids in this school system. How about you grow up, stop running your mouths, bullying others, and focus on the schools and the kids in them?!?! Kellie Patterson is the one board member who's motive is pure and clear, helping make the school system better. I am a Falls Alumni and I am disgusted and ashamed to admit it...very happy that my child does not have the displeasure of being in this school system. Maybe when you "adults" can stop worrying about Kellie and what she is doing and focus on the schools they will be something to be proud of again.
