Summit Citizens with Developmental Disabilities Show Olympic Spirit

The official Olympics may be in London this year, but the games are being played in Summit County's backyard.

The County of Summit Developmental Disabilities Board (Summit DD) is celebrating the Olympics at their Tallmadge Work Center with their own mini version of the summer games.

It began with a mock opening ceremony where "countries" paraded in one-by-one with a torch. The games will be played every day from July 30 through Aug. 10.

“The athletes are very excited to have a chance to support the Olympics with their own games,” said Michelle Dolensky. "Each person served at the center will be representing a country and competing for medals."

The closing ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 10 at 2 p.m. at Summit DD’s Tallmadge Work Center, at 630 North Ave. in Tallmadge to award medals to all of the countries who participated.
