Dam Removal Pushed to Next Week

Installation of the demolition equipment should begin by June 20.

The wait continues.

Due to high water levels, the demolition of the Sheraton Mill Dam has been moved to next week, according to Cuyahoga Falls City Service Director Valerie Wax Carr.

An official date has not been set, but Carr said the public will be given 48 to 72 hours notice prior to the first dam being cut.

In the meantime, the river has been shut down and is off limits to the public from Riverfront Park to Prospect Bridge.

Carr said demolition equipment, including a floating barge, would be set up in the river by the end of this week.

"Much of the equipment will be placed on the floating barge to allow for demolition," said Carr.

Once the Sheraton dam is demolished, deconstruction of the LeFever Powerhouse Dam will begin next month.

The $1 million project, funded by the Ohio EPA, will improve the Cuyahoga River ecosystem and is said to add recreational benefits, such as whitewater kayaking.
