City Council Considering Curfew Along Riverfront Mall

Parents of young violators could be fined $50 civil fee.

The Cuyahoga Falls City Council is considering a plan to impose a strict curfew for minors in the riverfront area that includes the popular Rockin’ on the River summer concert series.

An ordinance was introduced to address problems with unsupervised minors in the Falls River Square area, particularly during the Rockin’ on the River series on Fridays in the summer.

The proposal specifies a “special curfew area” between Oakwood Avenue and Broad Boulevard along the Riverfront Mall and boardwalk, between Fourth Street and the Cuyahoga River, which would restrict unsupervised children between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. in that area.

Youths in paid attendance at the Natatorium would be exempt, as would minors returning home from work or school activities, or in an emergency situation.

Violation of the ordinance would be considered an “act of unruliness.”

Parents or guardians of juveniles cited for violating the curfew could be fined $50. If parents or guardians do not retrieve the youths at the police station within three hours, offenders could be placed in juvenile detention facilities.

is seeking to control an increase noticed last summer of juveniles appearing in the vicinity of the popular Friday night Rockin’ on the River series, which has coincided with increased reports of crime in the area.

Police Capt. Jack Davis will be available at the 6:30 p.m. April 4 public meeting at the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium to answer questions about the issue.

In other business, the City Council on Monday approved funding for the city’s annual street resurfacing. The council also adopted ordinances approving plans for the Manchester Falls subdivision on Howe Avenue; a building expansion on Remington Road; a new energy purchase plan with American Municipal Power Inc.; and selected Testa Builders Inc. to manage development and construction for the Neighborhood Stabilization Program.
