Woman's Death in the River Ruled Accidental

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office releases its autopsy results.

The death of the Cuyahoga Falls woman who fell into the Cuyahoga River Wednesday was ruled accidental by the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.

At 12:20 a.m., Dianna Dyak, 46, was at the drinking with her companion and fell into the Cuyahoga River. Her body was discovered 30 yards down stream.

“She died due to a dislocated neck from falling in the water and it was ruled accidental,” said Gary Guenther, chief investigator for the medical examiner.

The man who was with her, jumped into the river to save her, but due to her size and physical impairments, she traveled down stream too quickly, Cuyahoga Falls Police Chief Tom Pozza said.  The man told her to hold onto a tree branch while he sought help. Pozza said he unsuccessfully looked for a friend he thought was there, then walked to the River Front Grille and asked the bartender to call 911.

Pozza estimates Dyak had been in the water for 45 minutes to 90 minutes before emergency medical workers arrived. She was found dead in the water.
