Police Blotter: Secret Shopper Turns Out to Be Known Scam Artist, Thefts and Identity Fraud

Woman escapes "secret shopper" scam

Earlier this month, a woman deposited $1,790 in money orders from a person who claimed to be a "secret shopper." She then withdrew $1,414 of the cash and sent it, Western Union, to New Jersey. Shortly thereafter, the New Jersey State Police contacted the woman and said she had been scammed. Luckily, the Front Street resident was refunded $1,288 and only lost $100 on the too-good-to-be-true fraud, according to a report.

Thefts and Identity fraud

  • Last Friday afternoon, a Victor Avenue resident reported that someone stole her Visa credit card number and went on a $465 shopping spree. 
  • A man called police on Friday morning and told officers that someone broke into his SUV on 10th Street. The thief swiped his Ping golf clubs, which were worth an estimated $1,420. 
  • On Thursday afternoon, a man called police after realizing someone had made off with his debit card. The thief wasted no time and racked up over $1,100 in charges before the account was closed. The Loomis Avenue resident called his bank and the unauthorized purchases were reversed. 

Drunk man awakens to emergency crew

Police and fire were called to an apartment complex on Second Street last Wednesay night after a tenant found an unreponsive man lying in one of the hallways. When emergency crews arrived, they determined the man was drunk and had passed out. Once he regained consciousness, he was issued with a drinking citation.
