Police Blotter: Halloween Rentals (Don't) Come Back to Haunt

The following information was provided by Cuyahoga Falls police. It does not indicate a conviction.

Theft

Halloween is a busy time for stores that rent and sell costumes. About a month later it’s a busy time for police taking reports on costumes that have not been returned.

• An  employee at , 4130 State Rd., said a “priest” costume that was due back on Nov. 3 still had not been returned on Nov. 26. The Mastercard the customer left was bad, the employee said. Loss was estimated at $250.

•Also missing and past due was a “Captain Malcolm” costume. The store was able to recover $50 through a credit card number, the remaining estimated cost of $200 is a loss.

• A “French maid” costume that had been rented on Oct. 17 is still missing. The credit card number given as deposit was bad, Mr. Fun’s reported. The loss for that costume is estimated to be $500.

• A resident on the 2700 block of Oak Park reported someone made unauthorized charges to her Charter One debit card in the amount of $6,129.28 between Nov. 25 and Nov. 26 at a Target store in Illinois. 

Assault, kidnapping

An Akron woman told police she was assaulted by her boyfriend at the , 1767 State Rd., again in a car outside, and again at his house on the 100 block of Cochran Road. The victim told police Israel Mendez repeatedly prevented her from leaving, hitting her and kicking her from about 2:30 a.m. Nov. 20 into the morning. She finally left at about 4 p.m. Nov. 20. Mendez was arrested Nov. 22 on charges of assault, aggravated assault and kidnapping.

Aggravated menacing

A resident on the 600 block of Monroe Avenue reported that an ex-girlfriend has made repeated threats to her, including threats to kill her. The ex-girlfriend left a 13-inch knift stuck in the door jamb of the victim’s home. She was referred to the prosecutor.

Robbery

A Kent resident told police he was robbed and assaulted near the intersection of Issaquah Street and Northmoreland Boulevard at about 6 p.m. Nov. 25. The victim said as one male held him against his car, another took an amplifier and two speakers out of the car. Loss was estimated at $1,800. 

Breaking and entering, burglary 

• A house on the 2400 block of 23rd Street was broken into and cut two lengths of copper pipe, the owner told police, sometime between Nov. 23 and Nov. 25.

• A resident on the 200 block of West Portage Trail reported that his apartment had been broken into and electronics valued at $1,950 were taken. The resident was out of town and a neighbor initially reported the break-in.

• Mark DeVinney of Akron was arrested on charges of burglary after police said he kicked in the front door of a residence on the 4200 block of Americana at about 5:30 a.m. Nov. 24.

• Someone broke into the rear bathroom door of a house on the 2400 block of 23rd Street and all the copper piping in the basement was taken between Nov. 19 and Nov. 23. The loss was estimated at $3,000.
