Memorial Day Weekend Arrests

While the number of arrests were higher across Ohio for drinking and driving and drug-related crimes, it was pretty quiet in Cuyahoga Falls.

In Ohio, drug arrests increased 22 percent and drunk driving arrests increased by 8 percent overall since last the last Memorial Day weekend, but in Cuyahoga Falls only three drunk driving arrest was made.

According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, nine people lost their lives in nine crashes over the weekend in Ohio. In Cuyahoga Falls no fatal accidents were reported.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol handed out 5,541 safety belt violations – an increase of more than 15 percent from 2010. The patrol made 18,034 non-enforcement contacts, of which 5,718 were to assist motorists and 46 were to assist other law enforcement agencies.

Crash investigations were on the decline – down nearly 6 percent since last Memorial Day. Arrests for speed violations of 20 or more mph above the speed limit were down 4 percent.

Since taking over as the , Tom Pozza said he hasn't changed the enforcement plans for just holiday weekends, but instead, has beefed up enforcement overall.

"Overall, traffic enforcement is up since I became chief," said Pozza. "I am a big
proponent of traffic enforcement every day of the year, nothing special for holidays."
