Foul Play Ruled out in Gorge Metro Park Death

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office narrowed Daniel Short's manner of death to two possibilities.

Daniel Short's manner of death was ruled "undetermined" by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office on Friday.

According to his death certificate, Short, 51, of Cuyahoga Falls, jumped or accidentally fell 40 feet down into Gorge Metro Park earlier this week.

Either way, through its investigation and autopsy findings, the medical examiner's office has ruled out foul play.

A hiker spotted Short sprawled out along the rocky terrain below Mary Campbell Cave at 4:45 p.m. Monday. 

He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter by Cuyahoga Falls EMS after sustaining blunt force trauma to the chest. 

Barring any new developments, "the investigation has come to an end." said Cuyahoga Falls Police Sgt. James Singleton.

Short graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1978, and served six years in the U.S. Army.

"He is survived by daughter, Lindsay Short; sister, Linda Stillwell; brother, Michael Short; nephew, Randy (Leah) Stillwell; his mother and stepfather, Mary and Warren Gregory; and step-siblings, Warren, Jay, Jean and Ann," reports the Falls News Press. 

A memorial service will take place at 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Ciriello and Carr Cuyahoga Falls Chapel, located at 810 Portage Trail.
