Driver Seriously Injured in State Route 8 Crash

Firefighters use Jaws of Life to free driver involved in major accident on Friday.

Stow firefighters and paramedics wasted no time on Friday when rescuing a man who was pinned inside his car after a major accident on State Route 8 Northbound.

Details of the crash remain unclear, but according to Stow Fire Capt. Mark Stone, the man's car was wedged beneath a semi near the Graham Road exit. 

Firefighters worked quickly, using the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic cutting tools to free him.

"It took our guys about 25 minutes to extricate him from the car and get him off to the hospital," said Stone. "That's fast when you consider the weather, road conditions and traffic jam they were dealing with."

The driver, who wasn't identified, suffered serious injuries in the crash, and was taken to Akron City Hospital.

The extent of his injuries is unknown. 

Due to the accident, traffic was backed up to the Front Street exit, said Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Robart.

Robart described the accident as "severe" and encouraged motorists to use alternate routes to avoid the bumper-to-bumper traffic.
