Former Northampton Fire Chief, Retired Cuyahoga Falls Fire Department Captain Dies

He fought fires for the Northampton and Cuyahoga Falls fire departments before and after the communities merged.

Myron E. Harrington Jr. fought fires in the former Northampton Township and Cuyahoga Falls before and after the two communities merged in 1986.

The Cuyahoga Falls resident, who died Feb. 2 at age 71, was born in what used to be Northampton Township, which became Ward 8 in Cuyahoga Falls.

Harrington, who also farmed, became a firefighter with the Northampton Fire Department in 1968.

He served two stints with the . His first stretch lasted from 1968 until 1980, when he resigned to become chief of the Northampton Fire Department.

Harrington returned to the Cuyahoga Falls firefighting force in 1986 after Cuyahoga Falls and Northampton Township became the first city and township to incorporate in Ohio history.

On Aug. 10, 1993, Harrington retired as captain of the Cuyahoga Falls firefighters.

He belonged to IAFF 494, the firefighters union, and Akron Firefighters Retirees Association.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Joyce; daughter, Kelley; son, Myron E. III; stepsons, Tim and Ted; and sisters, Janet Sykes and Jeanne Wunderle.

A memorial service will take place at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at , 3996 State Road, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223, where the Cuyahoga Falls Fire Department Honor Guard will sound the tradition “Last Alarm.”
