George F. Seigman, 89, Designed the Official Seal of Summit County

He taught history at Ellet High in Akron and sang with the Cuyahoga Falls Community Chorus.

George F. Seigman, a retired history teacher, designed the official seal of Summit County, which was adopted by the County Council in 1981.

The Cuyahoga Falls resident, who died March 30 at age 89, created the seal as a circle, divided into four parts. Each quarter depicts a different aspect of county history: Its beginnings as the Western Reserve wilderness, its role as a major stop along the Ohio and Erie canals, its agricultural economy and its industrial era.

At the center of the seal is “1840,” the county’s founding date. The seal’s outer ring has 10 stars – five on each side - representing the county’s status in 1981 as having Ohio’s 5th largest population and 5th largest income level.
