Cuyahoga Falls is Home to Outdoor Winter Fun

Some residents actually want to get outside in this weather and here's how.

The thought of purposely and willingly entering the chilly winter weather might seem absurd to some, but for others that enjoy it, Cuyahoga Falls has a few fun things to do.

Not everyone can be speed skater Apolo Ohno, but there’s no harm in trying. Lace up, Velcro on or buckle tight a pair of ice skates and head to the Outdoor Ice Rink at Falls River Square or – eventually – Gorge Park.

The twinkling tree lights, 26-foot Christmas tree and lighted snowflakes create a spirited feel for the holidays. The rink is skated by many visitors, but also hosts group outings for family gatherings, birthdays or holiday parties, said Jennifer Syx, Deputy Director of Development.

“On any given day in the winter, you will find kids on the rink, parents on the skate deck drinking hot chocolate and coffee and Christmas music playing through the outdoor speakers,” said Riverfront District Manager, Jim Nace.

This year, the rink has partnered with Kent State University to bring in experienced, CPR certified instructors for hockey and skating lessons on Saturdays. The Kent State University Ice Arena had helped start the Cuyahoga Falls rink and has traded services for about five years, said KSU Ice Arena manager, Bill Switaj.

Summit County Metro Parks

Once the warm weather and rain is history, and the ground freezes, the park will be bursting with outdoor winter fun.

Gorge Park’s outdoor ice rink will be another skating destination for those who prefer a more natural atmosphere. Though it’s not open yet, it will be later this winter during the colder weeks.

Cascade Valley provides cross country skiing trails and sledding hills for when the snow finally falls and old man winter has made his arrival. Bring your own sleds and skis for these activities.

With or without snow, hiking is another option to stay active this winter. You can see the park in a whole new way when you explore its bare-branched wonderland.

Call the seasonal information hotline for updates at 330-865-8060 before heading out.
