A shredded iceberg lettuce package sold at Giant Eagle stores is being recalled because of concerns that it could be contaminated with listeria bacteria, which can cause food poisoning.

The product being recalled is described as F.M Shredded Lettuce, UPC No. 3003430195.

In a statement at its website, Giant Eagle said, "Do not consume product with a sell by date of 10/14/11. This is the only affected lot at this time. Return To Giant Eagle for a full refund. Listeria infection can cause fever, stiffness, vomiting and other symptoms. It is treatable with antibiotics, according to www.foodsafety.gov.

The lettuce recall affects all Giant Eagle stores in Ohio and Pennsylvania, said spokeswoman Paula DePasquale.
