Future Uncertain for Graham Road Giant Eagle

What would you do with the existing location given that a new Giant Eagle will be constructed a block away in the much-anticipated Portage Crossing development?

officials aren't yet ready to speculate on the future of the Graham Road location, but that doesn't mean the Patch community can't weigh in with its opinions.

What should happen to the existing super market when a 92,000 sq. ft. Giant Eagle is built a block away in the new Portage Crossing development?

It could be a nice spot for a movie theater, or, perhaps, another large franchise could move in and occupy the space.

At an April 16 committee meeting, Cuyahoga Falls Director of Development Sue Truby said the city was actively working with Giant Eagle to avoid another vacant retail space on Graham Road.

is set to begin this summer with a spring 2014 completion date.

Please laave a comment below and tell us what you think. Once all the comments are in, Patch Local Editor John Deike will email the messages to Truby to keep her in the loop on the community's thoughts/solutions. (Only tactful and constructive comments will be emailed.)

The 65 year old Krieger is so ornery he wouldn't move there if they GAVE the property to him. He just wants to try and beat the City out of money at the current location so he can retire in the manner to which he'd like to be accustomed.
mary lou hayward-brown May 15, 2012 at 12:35 pm
Why move Giant Eagle??? Seems senseless to me. They should have put Trader Joe's in the new Portage Crossing!! It is an awesome store and wouldn't take business from Giant Eagle. We need something New in the Falls!!!!!
Lynette May 15, 2012 at 12:38 pm
Maybe Kohl's would move in? Or maybe Acme could move over to Graham Road.
Raymond Skocir May 15, 2012 at 01:31 pm
No way will giant eagle let another grocery store move in that's probably why there moving to portage trail so another grocery store won't go there because they only want one in portage crossing... they have a strategy I bet
Jeff May 15, 2012 at 01:53 pm
I'm with Mary Lou - Leave Giant Eagle there and put something else in at Portage Crossing (preferably a Trader Joe's).
But seeing how this is not going to happen, put in a Cinemark! All the nearby theaters are old and have smaller screens, inferior sound systems, and cost more than Cinemarks!

Need a Dave & Buster's down here! Closest one is in West Lake. It's a fun place to go to. It will draw people that stay at some of the hotels. I.e. all the business people.
Nikolas May 15, 2012 at 01:57 pm
I agree!! That place is going downhill fast! I am so thankful for Cornerstone Market..Finally a local food shop with good produce and no bad attitudes :)
Nikolas May 15, 2012 at 01:58 pm
I think there should be a movie theatre or an arcade..something fun for the family!!
Deanna Perdue May 15, 2012 at 02:15 pm
It is my understanding that Trader Joe's opted not to come here. Does anyone know if this is true? I had heard that the city wanted them, but they did not feel the area would support one of their stores.
Deanna Perdue May 15, 2012 at 02:23 pm
I am betting that the current Giant Eagle will not be able to compete with the new WalMart supercenter just down the road. Giant Eagle higher-ups probably believe that only a new, updated Giant Eagle will be able to maintain their share of business after the WalMart is finished. Thoughts?
Nikolas May 15, 2012 at 02:39 pm
I hate walmart! dont shop there EVER! I choos giant eagle grocerys over walmarts ANYday! Im sure im not the only one that feels that way too!, I hope..lol
Christine May 15, 2012 at 04:51 pm
The lure of Cuyahoga Falls is that it's a quaint area. With the concerts, ice skating and little shops at the riverfront it's a nice focal point. My understanding is that they want this portage crossing to be similarly quaint. A place where people want to walk around and visit shops. So, I think something along the lines of an open theater area (drive in or amphitheater are options), or moving the farmers market here, actually both would be nice. No more big stores please! Keep it quaint.

We need a Kohl's in this area. Tired of going over to near Kent.
Geoffrey Watson May 15, 2012 at 09:14 pm
I think Giant Eagle should stay where they are. What is wrong with being around the corner on graham Rd? Why go to Portage Crossings and hog a large portion of the area. Why not bring in more stores, restaurants, etc. They could put a huge amount of other business' in the area where Giant Eagle will occupy. Are they going to put the Getgo up there too?

Why give Giant Eagle a Tax break so they can get a new store instead of remodel their old one? If they were moving more than a block away that would be one thing, but 1 block? This is another example of Cuyahoga Falls, giveing a lot for nothing! Why didn't the city look for some thing else, such as a Costco? that would be a benefit for the city, not giving a tax break for for an existing store to move one block.
Paul May 16, 2012 at 08:00 am
Acme is breaking ground in a few days on the current State Rd location, will be finished by winter holidays .
Paul May 16, 2012 at 08:04 am
It is interesting going into walmart late at night and watching the progression of the expansion, must be very cramped during the day with a lot more customers.
Brandon Moore May 16, 2012 at 08:35 am
I think a movie theater would be cool but I also want to see a Sheetz built there where the old BP used to be!
Dave L May 16, 2012 at 01:16 pm
Movie theaters are slowly going the way of the drive-in....away.
The mayor didn't do the Woodridge School District any favors by letting Giant Eagle move out of their district. That should have never happened without a guarantee from GE of finding a suitable tenant to make up the tax loss. Robbing Peter to pay Paul doesn't help our community.

Here is an interesting survey link about which grocery stores people prefer:

I vote for Kohl's!
Troy McClure May 17, 2012 at 02:56 pm
Ding ding ding.
It is pretty customary of grocery stores that when they vacate a property and move to a newer location nearby, that they will not (usually) lease it to another grocer or very-close competitor.
Troy McClure May 17, 2012 at 02:58 pm
Walmart Supercenters SUCK!
I don't understand why people get excited whenever Walmart announced they're building or expanding into a supercenter. Their grocery prices, quite frankly, suck! You get better deals at Giant Eagle and Acme. For example, Walmart's "store brand" products are usually not a good deal compared to the GE and Acme store-brands.
Troy McClure May 17, 2012 at 03:01 pm
A movie theatre ain't going there. Not unless Regal closes the one in Hudson and relocates (unlikely). There are plenty of screens in the immediate area. And for someone complaining about the cost of a movie at Cinemark, umm, they're all about the same price.
A lot of you mentioning Trader Joe's and saying GE shouldn't have been allowed to move need to take a pretty basic business course. A city has no right to tell a business they can't move. I can't believe there are that many dumb people who would actually say they shouldn't have been allowed to move. Not only that, it only further shows many of you do NOT pay attention at all. You're not getting just "another" Giant Eagle. Freaking whiners.
Troy McClure May 17, 2012 at 03:02 pm
I love Cornerstone!
Troy McClure May 17, 2012 at 03:03 pm
Who is "they"? How about learning about business works.
Trader Joe's will NOT come to a city like Cuyahoga Falls. That's just how they roll. Look at where their stores are located. That's intentional.
Jeff May 17, 2012 at 03:27 pm
Actually, in Phoenix, Trader Joe's is NOT a snooty store. It is located in all areas of Phoenix, including areas that would "matchthe demograhics" of Cuyahoga Falls. They probably made the decision not to go into Portage Crossing based upon other business elements. Trader Joes is even at the edge of poorer areas of the Phoenix metro area, such as in Tempe on the border with Guadalupe. It's not a real nice area, yet the store thrives. They have great products at very reasonable prices. The fact that there's only one around here, and that it's on Chagrin Blvd. gives it the appearance of an upscale store. It's just a good store that any "demographic" can appreciate. If you're calling Cuyahoga Falls an area with no class, then you have no class.

Afternoon Troy. Please try and be a little more tactful with your comments. Thanks.
Jeff May 16, 2013 at 04:12 pm
I wish "Troy" was still here. He seems to have personality of his namesake. Hey Trooooy! Guess what! They're building a Cinemark in Cuyahoga Falls! And BTW, Cinemark costs LESS than Regal.

What's going on in the Paridise club in cuyahoga Falls is unbelievable, and for sure needs reported.Read More I was approached in October /november by the manager at that time. He came on to me in a very sick manner, said some very perverted commits and when I spoke up telling him I'm new to sobriety and not interested , he just chuckled with this disturbing smile. Then went on to offer me a job there at the Club, said I could through him get hired, then next came a sick smile. I left and didn't go back there for awhile . Would sometimes attend the AA meetings in the basement of Paridise Club , but stayed away from upstairs. But always very uncomfortable that I'd run into him. I had heard that He was no longer president because he admitted to being a sexual predator which involved several child of the AA members and others ,ect. So I stopped in for coffee and fellowship a month or so ago, and didn't see him until after I sat down. He was playing pool, but saw me. My stomach dropped , upon trying to leave , he approached me asking how sobriety was going. Then offered me a job to clean his apartment. Very ere! If I see him again there I will call the police. My friends daughter worked there I found out later. It's just plane sick that he is allowed there.

I would like to know where the person who wrote this blog got their information. AA is not aRead More religious cult or a cult of any sort. Members of AA have been helping other alcoholics since 1935. Medical science has proved that alcoholism is a disease with NO cure. AA is there to offer a helping hand.

We were very fortunate to have the Humane Society take them. They should be available for adoptionRead More soon. I am just deeply saddened that people can do something like this with no concern for the dogs' welfare and to thrust that responsibility onto others who can't stand by and do nothing.

I agree, this is inconsiderate and unkind. I would wish that people would not treat their animalsRead More so, but that remains a wish. However, I am thankful that something worse did not happen. At least at the park, someone was there who was kindhearted enough to take action. I shudder to think of the "other" possibilities.
