Summa Western Reserve Hospital will host its 3^rd annual Rumble at the Reserve Blood Drive on Thursday, August 23, 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. A collaborative initiative with the American Red Cross to bolster vital blood donations in the community and at-large, the event is open to the public and will be held at Summa Western Reserve Hospital at 1900 23^rd St., Cuyahoga Falls, OH. All donors will receive a free t-shirt and refreshments will be provided.

The annual event features Summa Western Reserve Hospital’s Departments of Surgery and Medicine squaring off in a mock boxing match for the title to see which department can bring in the most donors. Employees at the hospital choose a department to support and the victor’s team earns an actual title boxing belt as the prize for the win.

Summa Western Reserve Hospital broke a collection record last year and exceeded donor expectations with a record turnout of 246 registered donors and 176 usable pints collected – surpassing last year’s goal of 173 usable pints. The event also included 78 first-time donors. This year, the hospital plans to collect 194 usable pints.

Every two seconds a patient in the United States needs a blood transfusion. Since blood donations through the American Red Cross are the lowest they have been in the past 15 years, anyone who is eligible is urged to donate blood. People with all blood types are needed, and donors with blood types O negative, O positive, A negative or B negative are especially encouraged to give.
