Battle of Antietam featured at Jan. 9 historical society meeting
The next meeting of the Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society will be held on Weds., Jan. 9 at the Cuyahoga Falls Library, 2015 Third St., at 7 p.m.
Speaker for the event will be Denny Reiser, who will give a presentation on the Battle of Antietam, one of the pivotal events of the Civil War. The Battle of Antietam was fought at Sharpsburg, Md., on Sept. 17, 1862. During the battle, more than 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing in action.
The battle is credited with ending the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North. It also led to President Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
Reiser has researched the battle extensively, as well as photographed the Antietam National Battlefield. He will share images from the park and other battle information during his presentation.
The meeting, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the library’s downstairs Sutliff meeting room.
