Supreme Court Approves Early Voting in Ohio During Weekend Before Elections

The high court decided against Ohio Republican-backed law to restrict early voting during the first weekend of November

Ohio voters who want to cast their ballots the weekend before Election Day will face no restrictions.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday decided against issuing an order that would have ended the early voting period before the first weekend in November, NBC News reported.

President Barack Obama's campaign pushed for voters to be able to hit the polls and won an appeal in the the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to block a law that would have limited the period.

Ohio Secretary of State John Husted refused to enforce the appellate court decision, but the U.S. Supreme Court came down with a one-line decision against the Republican-backed effort to limit early voting.

"The application for stay presented to Justice [Elena] Kagan and by her referred to the Court is denied," the order reads.

The Sunday before elections proved to be key in Obama's Ohio victory four years ago, particularly for African Americans, according to the Huffington Post.

"We had buses at every church that Sunday," Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church of Cleveland Rev. Theophilus Caviness told HuffPost. "As soon as we left church, we got on the bus and went down to vote."

The Obama campaign expressed pleasure with Tuesday's decision to several media outlets.

"This action from the highest court in the land marks the end of the road in our fight to ensure open voting this year for all Ohioans, including military, veterans, and overseas voters,” campaign general counsel Bob Bauer told the New York Daily News.

Could someone please explain why it is so hard to vote on voting day. It's not like we don't know when it is and can't make arrangements to go. This early voting is ridiculous and a waste of taxpayer dollars.

And that is NOT the point.
But I don't expect many people on here to pay attention (see James Thomas. IT's more convenient to keep their head up their backside)

"Try whatever dirty tricks you can to stop people from voting more than once"

You wanna back that steaming pile of stupidity up -- for once? Or do you prefer to just sound as uneducated as you constantly portray yourself?

It's so that people will vote one time, instead of not at all.

"It is only a tactic to vote often ."

You care to back that up. You and Jean can both take turns seeing what you can pull out of your uneducated, right-wing backside.

Yeah, I'll wait.

^ "de mo rats"? Your not helping to represent your belief in the republican agenda wisely by sounding so stupid. On second thought its is an accurate representation.

Who's got the stats on ACTUAL voting fraud claims? Voting fraud consists of .00007% of the vote, seems fishy that we would waste so much time and resources fighting something so insignificant like this..unless there's an alternative motive!

Hey, I resemble that remark! I already "voted early" as a first-time user of the absentee ballot...first week of October, in fact.

"Vote often" means every year, not just when it's a presidential election year. Duh! I don't care when people vote (early, on time, etc) but to not vote at all, especially if your're black or a woman, is a crime. I will honor the women who were abused, imprisoned, and even killed so that I can have a voice in this country by voting "often"!
My husbands work schedule doesn't allow him to get to the polls on Tuesday's so he always utilizes his early voting rights. Shocking right?? An EMPLOYED, WHITE MALE voting early, who would have thought? No doubt his intentions are questionable, at the very least he must be an evil democrat (he's not). The talking points on both sides of this issue are tired and lame.

The Supreme Court decision had nothing to do with voter fraud. The issue at hand was if Husted had the right to eliminate access to the polls the weekend before the election. The S.C. refused to take up Husted's argument.

The Anti-Alinsky's boss just informed The Anti-Alinsky that insurance premiums will be going up 12% next year! 12%!!!

If this is change we can count on maybe The Anti-Alinsky should move to a less restrictive country, like Russia!

Some people actually work. Some have to work two and sometimes more jobs to get by. Not everyone can get to the voting booths just any ol' time. One of my jobs told us that we had a choice, take off to vote or keep your job. There are a lot of places like that and more and more are pulling that kind of crap. Some of them are even saying if you don't vote their way you will lose your job. Thank god some people actually believe in allowing everyone access to voting, instead of just people who have 9-5 jobs and lots of spare time. So tired of all the arguments from people who can't see any way but their own.

When did Bush promise to give you a life long job? You didn't plan, you didn't build marketable skills, you didn't give 100% and you blame other people. And we wonder why this nation is in the crapper.

It will be okay. Obama promised jobs. If not, you can keep getting checks and a free cell phone until it runs out.
