This article is completely unnecessary and will protect no child. Instead it will serve to harass law abiding citizens who have paid their debt to society and been rehabilitated. Why do I say that? Because there are NO reported cases in the entire state of Ohio, of any child being assaulted while trick or treating! For more details go to a comprehensive study by expert Jill Levenson and others at http://sax.sagepub.com/content/21/3/363.abstract. John Deike has affirmed his ignorance on this topic and continues to put the children of Ohio at risk. Either out of laziness, a desperate desire for attention to his article, or some other motive, he has chosen to republish information readily available to anyone with an internet connection, i,.e. the Ohio sex offender database. In so doing, he perpetuates a myth and acts VERY irresponsibly both towards the children and the registered citizens of Ohio. A more responsible reportage would include these facts and statistics, as well as advice to parents and children on how to handle inappropriate touch, etc. Instead, he lazily rehashes the same old news about "sex offender stranger danger", which makes no one safer. The majority of new crimes are NOT committed by a registered person. Former sexual offenders have a very low recidivism rate, approximately 5.5%, according to unbiased statistics DO NOT BE MISLED BY THIS ARTICLE.

Evening Vahall,
Thanks for the comment, but I (in part) respectfully disagree. I think it's important to know who lives down the block, and I don't see how this post puts children at risk. DeWine's registry is a useful resource, and the community should be aware of it. If folks don't want to come under such scrutiny, they shouldn't commit sex crimes that can typically be labeled as heinous. However, given the study you referenced, I do agree there's more to the story. Feel free to write a Letter to the Editor with your arguments, and I'll publish it and promote it across our Facebook and Twitter pages. Best regards, JD

Well Vahall, you clearly told us all how you feel on this subject! The first impression I get from your extreme hostility toward the editor, is that you are defending a sex offender that you know. I'm sure all these offenders are rehabilitated and fine citizens to society now! Anyone who can hurt a child or another person sexually, is capable of doing it again. And while it is possible that new acts will happen by individuals doing it for the first time, how is this article in any way putting the children of Ohio at risk?? Maybe he was simply hoping to encourage parents not to allow children to go alone since you never know who your neighbors are? Lazy, desperate, irresponsible....those are some harsh accusations for someone you do not know simply because you don't agree with his article.
