Portage Crossing Update: Development Director 'Optimistic' About Project
Cuyahoga Falls Development Director Sue Truby weighs in on the proposed retail project.
A Cuyahoga Falls official confirmed Thursday that developer Stark Enterprises is still close to finalizing a set of deals that would bring a 10-screen Cinemark movie theatre to the proposed Portage Crossing site, a Menards to Graham Road and a new Get-Go to Portage Trail and State Road.
In a Jan. 31 email to Patch, Cuyahoga Falls Development Director Sue Truby said the deal could be finalized any day now and is "optimistic" about the project.
Original plans for Menards and Giant Eagle to anchor Portage Crossing were sidetracked in November after Stark was unable to clear room for the proposed 240,000-square-foot, two-story home improvement store when the owner of a nearby Pizza Hut refused to sell his land.
New plans under discussion may lead to the demolition of the Graham Road Giant Eagle to make room for a scaled-back, one-story Menards store.
Under this scenario, a Giant Eagle would then be constructed at Portage Crossing and the Graham Road Get-Go station would be moved to the corner of State and Portage Roads where a Marathon station now stands.
However, if Menards is built at the Graham Road location, the tax money it generates would go to the Woodridge Local Schools, not the Cuyahoga Falls City Schools.
Michael Symon’s B Spot Restaurant, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt remain in the Portage Crossing project, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Excellent news....now start moving dirt around and get this show on the road! Don't you know that I got money in my pocket that I want to spend in this new development? For all the people that are unhappy about this or that (like how long it has taken), I say get over it. The alternative to not having the development go through is not something the City of Cuyahoga Falls would want to see....federally funded low income housing.

Why not just leave the Giant Eagle and Get Go where they stand? What a waste of time and taxpayer dollars just to move the things one block away.
This is honestly the most ridiculous thing I've heard about in a long time.
State Road Shopping Center was a complete failure - what makes people think that putting another shopping center there is a good idea?
Also, there are already two movie theaters in Cuyahoga Falls.

The news here is that there's no news.
Welcome back to 2008.
We're just as far along as we were then. (With the exception of lots of news articles talking about the city's optimism.)

I think you hit the nail right on the head. I'm just glad to see they have the curb and entrance spots done. Whew that was a big job, now to take the next three years off.

I wish the 2 school districts would combine. Why do we need 2 different school districts in the same town?

because it's a big town!

Woodridge students not only live in Cuyahoga falls, they also live in Peninsula. The only reason Woodrige is part of the falls, because falls bought out Northampton.

There are plenty of towns bigger than the Falls that only have one District. I just feel it would save money.

School districts are set by the State Board of Education, not by geographic locales. Any change would have to be approved by the state, which, to my knowledge, so far, has not shown any interest in combining the two systems.

At what point in time can I reasonably stop being "optimistic" without sounding negative?

I agree with Amanda, leave Giant eagle where it is, put menards in the old Tops eye sore.

You want the Menard's tax revenue to go to Stow?

Not enough square footage for a Menard's and you'd still be dealing with Giant Eagle if the rumor of them purchasing an "option" on that little piece of grocery store heaven is true.

Not happy Menards would be scaled back it is an awesome home improvement store wish it would be full size like planned in the first place, would love to see a TJMaxx store or a Home Goods store also in the crossings. We need good shopping in the area, excited to see this coming.

I don't understand the system. If my house stood where the existing Pizza Hut is located, the city would take it under eminent domain if I wouldn't sell it. Why is Pizza Hut exempt? (not that I believe in eminent domain for a private project), Second, what does Menard's hope to gain if they did get the Pizza Hut site. At best, they might get a dozen or so more parking spaces. This whole argument is stupid.

It sounds like most people, including me, are tired of the long wait on this project. Why is it taking so long? The City of CF isn't fooling anyone; this project will never be finished - maybe they should build a new h.s. at this location - something like the Taj Majal in Tallmadge?
