Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education Appoints New President

The Board voted unanimously to appoint Kellie Patterson as president at an organizational meeting on Monday night.

With a unanimous vote on Monday night, Kellie Patterson was appointed president of the Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education.

Patterson, who has served on the board for five years, replaced Dave Rump in the leadership role.

Board member Barb Gunter was appointed vice president.

Patterson and Gunter will each serve one-year terms.

Following the vote, Patterson offered this statement to the public:

I want to thank my colleagues for their vote of confidence. There are many that would have thrown the towel in long ago. The fact that we still sit here together, despite the trials and tribulations we’ve faced, speaks volumes on the character of the people that I serve with.  Our differences do not divide us. Our differences seem to be the driving force behind our determination to give the children and young adults of Cuyahoga Falls a foundation for success.  The board is comprised of strong-willed and dedicated individuals with diverse backgrounds and skill sets that benefit the group as a whole in carrying out the districts mission- “To assure [that] each student is equipped with the skills necessary to meet the challenges of the future.”

The coming year is bringing epic changes to the way schools conduct business. The challenges we face are many, but, to steal a line from David Binkley- “A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him.” And we’ve had a lot of bricks thrown at us this past year. OTES, OPES, Common Core, online testing, complete overhaul of the report card system... You get it.

But I will go one further, I believe we’ve already laid that firm foundation. From here we have to build on the partnerships we’ve formed with businesses and secondary educators so that all children graduating from Cuyahoga Falls are on a clear road to success through our college and career ready programs. Dual enrollment, post-secondary options, and our career vo-tech programs are opening the doors for an ever broadening base of students . Fostering the idea that learning is a lifelong journey; that’s the best foundation we can give our children.

We’ve made great strides toward updating our methods and ideologies. Now we need to focus on the needs of the 21st century child, entering a 21st century workforce. Providing early opportunities for advancement will continue to be our focus and I’m confident we are heading in the right direction with the right people.

No wonder our school district is going down, the citizens elect a former member to the board in 2012 after serving and leaving and suing the board, costing our district money. She's more concerned about blogging and against a dress code than she is about the actual education of the students....offering them more than a beautician's way of life!

I don't understand how you can say that Ms. Patterson cost the district money instead of placing the blame where it belongs- with the rest of the board who chose to continually break the law. In case you missed it, she sued and WON and on more than one count! It was the failure of the other board members to follow Ohio law and to ignore repeated requests to comply with those laws that caused her to file suit. I've had several conversations with Ms. Patterson about our education system in general and she is passionate about the education of the students and providing them with the skills necessary to be successful adults.

As for blogging and dress codes... Well all I can say is, get with times man, I haven't blogged for two years and the dress code committee that I was on adjourned four years ago.

Wow! What exactly is "a beautician's way of life"? Is that the one where I pay my property taxes just like you? Why does my profession irritate you and your cronies so much?

I need to straighten you out on a few points. I didn't serve, leave and sue. I served with a few people that thought it was OK to violate the law and drag me into their unethical and unlawful actions. I didn't "sue" the board. I asked the Court to decide if the boards behavior was acceptable. The Court said that it wasn't acceptable. In fact the Court took it one step further and fined the board for its actions. In the meantime, I was not re-elected. I didn't "leave" the board.

Lastly- Our district isn't "going down." But the state has implemented new standards for reporting. Our district is "going reality." The reality is the "excellent" ratings that so many Ohio districts had were pipe dreams. Unless you consider 38% a passing grade. It's an "F" in my book. It WAS proficient in Ohio's.

We can do better and we will, now that we are dealing with reality.

Really?? I think it's time to clean house- out with the old, in with the new! Everyone on the current school board should be removed and replaced with new faces. Unless, of course, people just want to watch the schools get worse. It's not like we can send our kids to Riggs-LeMar like Kellie Patterson, they closed their doors years ago. Heaven forbid, we want our kids to have the resources and education so they can go to (gasp) an actual college.

Oh, and what on earth are "secondary educatiors"? Does Ms. Patterson not have access to spell check?

Thanks Rob!

Not all kids go to college AND of those that do start- less than half finish. Keep living in your dream world that we can set every CF graduate up for success in college. I deal with reality. The reality is they need a path to successful careers, whether through vocational training or college.

I for one, am very happy with my choice of career. I enjoy making people feel better about themselves.

WOW - Kellie, why are you on here hurling insults back and forth with the bloggers? I have a higher expectation out of an elected offical. I don't know you, never met you and have not formed an opinion yet. Based of what I've seen so far it's becoming negative. Please keep it professional, you represent the city in a very important position, lets not make parody of the position. I am not attacking you either, just trying to be honest with you. Thanks.

I couldn't agree more. If you are going to be in an position where you should be setting a positive example for others, especially our children, then behaving like a bully and openly admitting that you do things purposely to "irritate people" does not set well with me. I think Kellie could have make her point and addressed peoples concerns in a more professional and respectful manor.

I agree, please keep it professional, Kellie. You have just been elected into a very important position. Our children are extremely impressionable and need positive role models not only interracting with them on a daily basis in the classroom, but in all areas of the educational system. I don't think anyone is asking you to sit back & be quiet, but rather, to show us why you were elected to be the president of the BOE. All you have shown us so far is you have a temper & a sharp tongue.

To wmfr, IMHO and Stacy- Why are you yapping about Patterson being mean? Shouldn't you be wagging your tongues at the posters that, instead of congratulating her, chose to start the comment thread with hate and vitriol? Funny how you seem to overlook the true nastiness here and target Kellies comments.

It's sad that you can't see the truth of what is really wrong with schools today. It's not people like Kellie. It's the fact that there aren't enough people like Kellie.

I'm sorry you see it that way. I decided a long time ago that politics as usual was not my style. I like to interact with the public. Keep them informed. Let them get to know the person who is asking for their vote. In fact, while I was campaigning, this was what people told me they appreciated the most about me.

You think I should clam up? Leave you guessing where I stand? I just can't bring myself to do it. BTW, what do you consider an insult that I "hurled"? The attorney jab doesn't count...

Are you serious?! I think it's fine to have your own style but to argue like a child and write some of the things you did to another blogger on here does not exactly make you edgey and unique. It makes you look classless and demeans your position not only as a professional and leader but as a person. I am not going to reply to you asking for specific examples.

I can't begin to express my embarrasment and disapointment not only in my city but the board and people that elected you if this is how you openly conduct yourself. I certainly hope you seek feedback and coaching from your peers and colleagues on how to better handle yourself in public going forward.

Wanda, the internet may be the absolute worst place to defend one's character successfully, in my opinion. However, if you're going to do that, there is a manner in which it can be done with dignity and professionalism, so you don't look like a child throwing a tantrum. This is what I think people are objecting to here: not that she defended herself, but the manner in which she did it. I think we all were taken aback a bit by the coarse tone of her responses to inflammatory comments. Personally, I expect more from a educational professional in her position. I hope she can still be "real" after she simmers down.

Tell me, how do you "conduct yourself based on the position you agreed to"? Should she conduct herself like the Woodridge woman that resigned in shame?

Stacy

8:21 pm on Friday, January 18, 2013

Wanda, Kellie has the right to defend herself, just like you & I do. However, being the president of the BOE, I personally feel she should do it in a more professional manner & not with harsh words attacking others. That does not make her look, in my opinion, to be the best candidate for the position. I am simply asking that she show us why she was elected. Obviously she was voted in because they felt she could do the job as well as conduct herself accordingly. But, unfortunately for her, she is proving otherwise. As someone who has never met Kellie I have formed my opinion solely on her responses. She *may* be able to do the job, but I don't want someone who is so vile & unprofessional in such an important role.

Reality is that a minimum wage full time job will earn you $14,500/year. Reality is that by 2014 almost 75% of the jobs will require a post secondary degree and at least a certificate etc.(Ntl Governor's Assoc.) Reality is that current unemployment rates are 5% higher for those without degrees vs. those with degrees.(USDOL) Reality is that degree holders earn AT A MINIMUM $400 more per week than non.(USDOL) Reality is while MORE THAN HALF of the students who start college finish, the rates are low and our education systems should be looking at ways to help IMPROVE that statistic. We shouldn't accept as reality that any child is limited to getting a job that barely covers expenses, has little/no benefits, maternity leave, sick leave, must work overtime just to make ends meet and w/ wage increases that are significantly less than increases of living expenses. Reality is that while it appears more often than not civility and manners are on the decline you would HOPE that elected officials, especially those elected to help with the education of our children, would want to reverse that trend. Reality is that spelling and grammar DO count and an elected official, again especially one elected to help improve our children's education should care about both and less about spending time "irritating people like you". I believe the realities of NOT trying to better ourselves, our lives and our children's lives through education are far worse than suggesting we actually make the effort.

The reality is you're wrong. The National Governors Assc. report you cite actually says this- "The percentage of jobs requiring postsecondary education continues to rise and is expected to reach 63 percent by 2018." But don't be fooled folks, postsecondary is a reference to any education beyond high school, college or vocational training. Here's a link to the report. http://www.nga.org/files/live/sites/NGA/files/pdf/1107C2CACTIONGUIDE.PDF

Today, especially among low-income students who attend public community colleges as a gateway to a college or university, 27 percent actually graduate in four years, and 48 percent of those pursuing bachelor’s degrees at private schools do so, according to ACT Inc., an organization that provides college testing exams and other services.

The DOL stats? Well they aren't just talking about college degrees. Nobody ever said you don't need some sort of post secondary education. Here's a link to a DOL list of jobs that pay quite well with no college needed.
http://www.bls.gov/ooh/occupation-finder.htm?pay=&education=Postsecondary+non-degree+award&training=&newjobs=&growth=&submit=GO

So do you plan on showing some of that civility you dish and apologizing for posting stats that you pulled out your nether regions? You've make some big leaps from what Patterson said to talking about minimum wage jobs.

Ms Barnett- would you consider running for the school board???

I fully understand that not everyone wants or is able to have the college experience. However, I would think that a person tasked with a leadership role in a school district would encourage each student to achieve as much as they possibly can, rather than settle for "good enough" at such a young age. Instead, we have a school board president who I can only hope won't embarrass the district AGAIN by showing up at commencement in academic regalia.
